What is an LFP battery

LFP, lithium iron phosphate, is a lithium-ion battery chemistry that uses iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material and graphite as the anode. Commercialised in the early 2000s, LFP has overtaken NMC and other lithium chemistries for stationary solar storage because of three structural advantages: superior cycle life, high thermal stability and lower cost per kWh.

For Indian solar storage, LFP is the default chemistry. Hybrid inverter battery compatibility lists, telecom backup systems, residential energy storage and small commercial backup almost universally specify LFP. Two-wheeler and three-wheeler EVs increasingly use LFP, and even Tesla has shifted its standard-range vehicles to LFP.

LFP explained simply

LFP is one specific recipe of the lithium-ion battery family. The active ingredient on the positive electrode is iron phosphate instead of the nickel-cobalt-manganese mix used in NMC. For a full breakdown of how the two chemistries compare on real Indian pricing and lifespan, see our LiFePO4 vs NMC battery guide. The trade-off is energy density (LFP stores 30 to 50 percent less energy per kilogram) against safety, cycle life and cost (LFP wins on all three).

For a stationary battery sitting in a cabinet on a wall, energy density per kg does not matter. What matters is how many years it lasts, how efficiently it returns the energy stored in it (round-trip efficiency), whether it stays safe in Indian heat, and how much it costs per usable kWh. LFP wins.

Why LFP matters

Solar storage dominance. LFP is the chemistry of every credible Indian home and small commercial solar battery pack.

Safety in tropical climate. Indian summer rooftop ambient temperatures push 45 to 50 degrees Celsius. LFP handles these conditions far better than NMC, and it is highly resistant to thermal runaway.

Cost trajectory. LFP cell prices have fallen below USD 80 per kWh at the cell level in 2025, with system prices in India landing at ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 per usable kWh installed.

Recycling. Iron and phosphorus are abundant and non-toxic. Recycling is simpler than NMC.

EV growth. Two and three-wheelers dominate the Indian EV market, and almost all use LFP.

How LFP works

Charging:

  1. External voltage drives lithium ions out of the iron phosphate cathode.
  2. Ions migrate through the electrolyte to the graphite anode.
  3. Cell voltage rises from 3.2 V to 3.6 V at full charge.

Discharging:

  1. Load connected.
  2. Lithium ions return from anode to cathode.
  3. Cell voltage falls toward 2.5 V at deep discharge.
  4. Energy is delivered to the load.

The flat voltage curve between 3.0 V and 3.4 V is a defining LFP characteristic. State of charge estimation is harder than NMC because voltage changes little over a wide SOC range. Modern BMS use coulomb counting plus periodic voltage corrections, and our BMS in hybrid solar inverters guide walks through how these systems talk to the inverter.

Advantages of LFP

Long cycle life. The defining LFP advantage. 4,000 to 8,000 cycles at 80 percent DoD against 2,000 to 4,000 for NMC.

Excellent thermal stability. Thermal runaway threshold above 270 degrees Celsius. Safer than every other lithium chemistry.

Lower cost per kWh. Iron and phosphorus are cheap and abundant. Cobalt-free.

High DoD usable. 80 to 90 percent DoD without rapid capacity loss.

Ethical supply chain. No cobalt, lower nickel content, fewer human rights concerns.

Easier recycling.

Limitations of LFP

Lower energy density. 30 to 50 percent less than NMC. Not ideal for high-range EVs or weight-sensitive applications.

Flat voltage curve. SOC estimation requires sophisticated BMS algorithms.

Cold-temperature charging. Cannot charge below freezing without internal heater or pre-conditioning.

Lower nominal voltage. 3.2 V per cell against 3.6 V for NMC means more cells in series for the same voltage.

Common problems

BMS communication mismatch with inverter. Protocol mismatch causes pack to refuse to charge or discharge.

Cell imbalance. Persistent voltage spread between cells indicates BMS balancing failure.

Cabinet overheating. Indian summer ambient exceeds rated operating range without forced ventilation.

Calendar ageing during long idle. 2 to 3 percent capacity loss per year even when unused.

Connector corrosion in coastal humidity. Use marine-grade or sealed connectors.

Counterfeit cells. Unbranded or recycled grade-B cells masquerade as new in the grey market.

Best practices for LFP

Choose only inverter-compatibility-list-validated LFP packs.

Specify CAN bus communication for BMS.

Plan cabinet ventilation for sub-35-degree ambient in Indian summer.

Cycle within rated DoD (80 to 90 percent for LFP).

Update BMS firmware periodically.

Document warranty cycle and calendar conditions.

Schedule annual visual inspection of cells, terminals and cabinet.
