What is DC coupling

DC coupling is a solar-plus-storage system architecture in which the PV array and the battery bank share a common internal DC bus inside a single hybrid inverter. PV power feeds the DC bus through MPPT-controlled boost converters. Battery power flows in and out through a bidirectional DC-DC converter. A single AC inversion stage converts the DC bus into grid-quality AC.

This architecture contrasts with AC coupling, where PV inverter and battery inverter are separate units connected through the AC bus. DC coupling is the dominant topology for new residential and small commercial solar-plus-storage systems because of higher round-trip efficiency, lower capex and simpler installation.

In Indian solar, DC coupling appears in residential hybrid systems from Sungrow, Solis, Goodwe, Solax, Deye, Growatt, Tata Power Solar, Luminous and others. Most new hybrid inverter sales are DC coupled by default.

DC coupling explained simply

One inverter box on the wall. PV panels plug into it on one side, battery plugs into it on the other side, AC goes out to the home. Inside the box, the PV and battery share a common DC bus. The inverter decides every second whether to charge the battery, export to the grid, run the home, or supply backup.

The efficiency advantage comes from skipping an extra AC-DC conversion. Storing solar in the battery takes two conversion steps instead of three.

Why DC coupling matters

Higher efficiency. 91 to 94 percent round-trip vs 84 to 89 percent for AC coupling.

Lower capex. One hybrid inverter is cheaper than separate PV plus battery inverter.

Smaller footprint. Single wall-mounted device.

Simpler wiring. One inverter, one AC connection, one battery cable.

Backup default. Hybrid inverters typically include grid-forming backup output.

Better self-consumption. EMS sees both PV and battery directly, simplifying optimisation.

How DC coupling works

In a residential DC-coupled hybrid inverter:

  1. PV string feeds MPPT input.
  2. MPPT boost converter steps voltage to the DC bus, typically 380 to 800 V.
  3. Battery connects through a bidirectional DC-DC converter to the same DC bus.
  4. AC inversion stage converts DC bus to grid-quality AC.
  5. Control logic balances PV input, battery flow and AC output every millisecond.
  6. In grid-tied mode, AC inverter follows grid. In backup mode, AC inverter grid-forms an islanded supply.

The DC bus is the operational heart. Voltage is held constant by the control loop, regardless of PV or battery fluctuations.

DC bus design

Voltage range typically 380 to 800 V for residential, up to 1500 V for utility-scale.

The DC bus is buffered by a bulk capacitor sized for the inverter’s switching frequency and ripple.

Battery DC interface

The battery connects through a buck-boost converter that decouples battery voltage from DC bus voltage. This allows flexibility: a 48 V battery and a 100 V battery can both work with the same hybrid inverter (within the manufacturer’s range).

MPPT count

Typical residential hybrids have 1 to 4 MPPTs. Each MPPT can track a different orientation or shading group.

EMS integration

Because PV and battery are on the same DC bus inside one device, the EMS sees both directly. Decisions about charging, discharging, exporting and importing happen at the millisecond scale without inter-device communication.
