Lithium Ion Battery

Quick Definition

A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable energy storage device that uses lithium ions moving between intercalation electrodes to store and release energy. What is a lithium ion battery

A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable electrochemical storage device in which energy is stored and released by reversible movement of lithium ions between two intercalation electrodes through an electrolyte. The chemistry was commercialised in 1991 by Sony and has since become the dominant battery technology for portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid storage.

For solar applications, lithium-ion batteries cover a range of chemistries with different trade-offs. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) dominates stationary storage because of safety, cycle life and cost. Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) is preferred in EVs for energy density. Smaller volumes of lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and lithium manganese oxide (LMO) appear in consumer electronics and certain niche applications.

In India, lithium-ion installations for solar storage grew from under 100 MWh in 2020 to several gigawatt-hours by 2025, driven by the falling cost of LFP, growth of hybrid inverters, and the National Electric Mobility Mission expanding battery manufacturing.

Lithium ion battery explained simply

A lithium-ion battery has two electrodes separated by an electrolyte. When you charge it, lithium ions move from one electrode to the other through the electrolyte. When you use it, the ions move back, releasing energy. The shuttle happens thousands of times before the materials degrade enough to retire the battery.

Compared to a lead acid battery, lithium-ion stores roughly three times more energy per kilogram, lasts three to five times longer, charges faster, requires no watering and tolerates partial-state-of-charge cycling — see our lithium vs lead-acid comparison for real Indian pricing and payback numbers.

Why lithium ion batteries matter

Solar storage economics. LFP at ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 per usable kWh now competes with diesel backup and grid arbitrage in Indian conditions.

EV revolution. Without lithium-ion, modern EVs would not exist at meaningful range.

Grid services. Battery storage enables frequency regulation, peak shifting and renewable firming.

Telecom backup. Replacing lead acid in cellular towers cuts diesel consumption by 70 to 90 percent.

Backup power. Hybrid solar with lithium storage provides reliable 24-hour electricity for homes, clinics and schools.

How a lithium ion battery works

Charging:

  1. External voltage applied to the cell.
  2. Lithium ions leave the cathode (typically LFP or NMC).
  3. Ions migrate through the electrolyte to the anode (typically graphite).
  4. Electrons travel through the external circuit, doing work in reverse (charging power).
  5. Cell voltage rises to fully charged state.

Discharging:

  1. Load connected across cell terminals.
  2. Lithium ions move from anode back to cathode.
  3. Electrons flow through external circuit, powering the load.
  4. Cell voltage drops as state of charge decreases.

Charge and discharge cycles are managed by a BMS that monitors voltage, current, temperature and SOC, balances cells, and enforces protection limits — our BMS in hybrid solar inverters guide explains how this communicates with the inverter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lithium ion battery in simple words?
A rechargeable battery where lithium ions shuttle between two electrodes to store and release energy. It is the technology inside modern phone batteries, EVs and solar home batteries.
Is lithium ion same as lithium iron phosphate?
LFP is one chemistry within the lithium-ion family. NMC, NCA, LCO and LMO are other chemistries. All use lithium-ion shuttle as the storage mechanism.
What is the lifespan of a lithium ion battery?
Stationary LFP packs typically last 10 to 15 years and deliver 4,000 to 8,000 full cycles. NMC packs deliver 2,000 to 4,000 cycles.
Are lithium batteries safe?
Modern LFP is the safest lithium chemistry, with high thermal stability. NMC has higher energy density but more thermal runaway risk. All commercial packs use a BMS for safety.
Can I use a car battery for solar?
Lead acid car batteries are not designed for deep cycling. They die in 3 to 6 months under solar service. Use a deep-cycle lead acid or LFP designed for stationary cycling.
What is round-trip efficiency?
Energy out divided by energy in. LFP delivers 92 to 95 percent round-trip. NMC delivers 93 to 96 percent. Both far exceed lead acid at 75 to 85 percent.
Do lithium batteries need maintenance?
Far less than lead acid. No watering, no equalisation, no specific gravity checks. Periodic BMS firmware updates and visual inspection are sufficient.
Are lithium batteries eligible for subsidies in India?
PM Surya Ghar does not subsidise batteries directly. State schemes for energy storage and the recently announced viability gap funding for stationary storage cover utility-scale projects.
What is the cost of a lithium battery in India?
Approximate 2026 prices: ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 per usable kWh installed for LFP. Falling roughly 6 to 10 percent annually.
Why do EVs use NMC and home storage use LFP?
EVs prioritise energy density (range per kg). NMC delivers more Wh/kg. Home storage prioritises safety, cycle life and cost. LFP is the better fit.
What temperature do lithium batteries need?
Operating range typically 0 to 50 degrees Celsius. Best life is at 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Indian summer rooftops above 50 degrees can halve cycle life if cabinets are not cooled.
Can lithium batteries be recycled?
Yes. India's Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 require manufacturer-driven recycling. Recovery of lithium, cobalt and nickel is technically feasible and increasingly economic.
What is thermal runaway?
An exothermic chain reaction where battery temperature rises uncontrollably, leading to fire or explosion. Modern LFP is highly resistant to it.
Are lithium batteries waterproof?
Battery packs are usually rated IP65 or better for outdoor use. Individual cells are sealed but not designed for submersion. Cabinet design provides protection.
Do lithium batteries lose capacity over time?
Yes. Typical degradation is 2 to 3 percent per year for LFP under normal cycling. Calendar ageing continues even when idle.
