What is CAN bus

CAN (Controller Area Network) bus is a serial communication protocol used between Battery Management Systems (BMS) and solar inverters (and other devices) to exchange operational data. Originally developed by Bosch in the 1980s for automotive applications, CAN has become the standard communication protocol for modern lithium-ion battery storage in solar applications.

CAN bus uses differential signalling on a twisted pair (CAN_H and CAN_L) with 120-ohm termination. Standard CAN operates at up to 1 Mbit/s, with CAN FD (Flexible Data-Rate) supporting up to 8 Mbit/s. The protocol is robust against electrical noise and supports multi-device networks. See Battery Management System (BMS) in Hybrid Solar Inverters, Decoded for how CAN bus compares with RS485 Modbus in real BMS-inverter pairings.

For solar hybrid inverter-battery integration, CAN bus enables continuous data exchange:

  • Battery: reports SOC, voltage, current, temperature, SOH, alarms
  • Inverter: receives data, sends control commands, requests data

For Indian solar, CAN bus is the dominant communication protocol for hybrid inverter battery packs. Compatibility between specific inverter brands and battery brands depends on protocol matching, leading to inverter-battery compatibility lists — a check covered in How to Choose a Hybrid Solar Inverter, 5-Step Decision Guide.

Why CAN bus matters

Hybrid inverter integration. Standard protocol enables BMS-inverter communication.

Battery monitoring. Real-time data for EMS and apps.

Charge control. Inverter respects BMS-reported charge limits.

Safety. Fault and alarm communication.

Pack expansion. Multiple battery modules communicate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CAN bus in simple words?
A common language that battery and inverter use to talk to each other. The battery tells the inverter how full it is, how hot it is, and what it can do.
What does CAN stand for?
Controller Area Network.
Why is CAN used in batteries?
Robust, fast, multi-device protocol. Originally automotive but now standard in battery storage systems.
What is the data rate?
Standard CAN: 1 Mbit/s. CAN FD: up to 8 Mbit/s. Fast enough for real-time battery data.
Is CAN the only protocol?
No. RS485 / Modbus also common. CAN is preferred for modern lithium storage.
What data is exchanged?
SOC, voltage, current, temperature, SOH, max charge current, max discharge current, alarms, cell voltages, faults.
Is there a CAN standard?
ISO 11898 defines physical layer and data link layer. Application layer is manufacturer-specific.
Why protocol-specific?
Different manufacturers use different message formats. Compatibility lists specify which BMS works with which inverter.
What is CAN FD?
CAN with Flexible Data-Rate. Higher data rates and larger payloads than standard CAN.
Is CAN secure?
CAN itself has no security. Modern packs add encryption and authentication for cybersecurity.
What is the typical cable?
Twisted pair, 120-ohm terminated. Differential signalling on CAN_H and CAN_L.
How far can CAN signal travel?
Up to ~40m at 1 Mbit/s. Shorter at higher rates.
What is CANopen?
Higher-level protocol on CAN, standardised application layer. Some industrial battery applications use it.
Are EV batteries CAN connected?
Yes. CAN is standard in automotive. EVs use CAN extensively for BMS-vehicle communication.
What is the future of CAN?
Continues as standard. May coexist with Ethernet for higher bandwidth applications.
