AC Cable

Quick Definition

AC cable carries alternating current from the solar inverter output to the AC distribution board, meter and grid. Indian solar installations use PVC, XLPE or PVC-armoured cables sized for current capacity and voltage drop, with copper conductors at 4 to 240 mm² depending on system capacity.

What is AC cable

AC cable, in the context of solar PV, refers to the alternating-current cable that carries the solar inverter’s AC output through protection devices to the AC distribution board, bidirectional meter and grid connection point. Unlike specialised PV DC cable, AC cable for solar uses the same general-purpose building cable categories: PVC-insulated (IS 694), PVC-armoured (IS 1554) and XLPE-insulated (IS 7098).

Indian solar AC cables are predominantly stranded copper conductors with PVC sheath for indoor runs, PVC-armoured for outdoor or buried runs, and XLPE for higher temperature ratings or large utility applications. Cross-section selection follows current ampacity (per IS 732 tables) and voltage drop targets (typically 2 to 3 percent).

For residential PM Surya Ghar systems, AC cable runs from the inverter location to the existing distribution board where the bidirectional meter is installed. Distances are typically 5 to 30 metres. C&I and utility installations have larger and longer AC cable runs, with sizing based on detailed voltage drop and ampacity calculations.

Why AC cable matters

Yield. Voltage drop in AC cable reduces export and increases bills.

Safety. Inadequate sizing causes heating, insulation failure and fires — the same failure modes covered in our guide to solar inverter grounding and electrical safety.

Regulatory compliance. IS 732 wiring code and CEA Measures Relating to Safety require proper cable sizing.

Reliability. Quality AC cabling lasts 25+ years; poor cabling fails within 5 to 10.

Power quality. Voltage drop affects inverter grid synchronisation.

Voltage drop

For 415 V three-phase: V_drop = √3 × I × (R cos(φ) + X sin(φ)) × L

At PF 1 (resistive): simplified to V_drop = √3 × I × R × L for three-phase.

Sizing example: 5 kW residential single-phase

Real-world applications

Residential rooftop solar to distribution board.

C&I rooftop solar AC trunk runs.

Utility plant LT to step-up transformer.

EV charger AC supply, sized the same way as inverter output.

Commercial building AC distribution.

Common AC cable problems

Undersized cable causing voltage drop and yield loss.

Loose terminations causing localised heating.

Wrong colour code creating confusion during maintenance.

UV degradation on outdoor unprotected runs.

Inadequate earth conductor.

Cable damage during construction.

Best practices

Size for both ampacity and voltage drop.

Target voltage drop ≤ 2 percent for inverter-to-meter runs.

Use armoured cable for outdoor or buried runs.

Follow Indian colour code.

Use proper cable glands with IP ratings.

Document cable cross-section on the single line diagram.

Annual thermography during preventive maintenance.

Use proper torque on terminations.

Indian market context

Major Indian AC cable brands include Polycab, Havells, KEI, RR Kabel, Finolex, Universal and Apar — many of the same names covered in our guide to inverter suppliers and distributors in India.

ALMM does not certify AC cables. BIS certification under IS 694 / IS 1554 / IS 7098 applies.

PM Surya Ghar residential installations use 4 mm² to 10 mm² Cu PVC.

CEIG drawing approval verifies AC cable selections as part of the electrical drawing package submitted for approval.

Utility plants use 35 mm² to 240 mm² Cu / Al cables in trunk runs.

Common mistakes

Undersizing cable for sustained current.

Skipping voltage drop calculation.

Using indoor cable for outdoor run.

Wrong colour code at terminations.

Inadequate earthing conductor.

Mixing cable brands or grades in one run.

Key takeaways

AC cable carries inverter output to the distribution board and meter. Indian solar AC cabling uses PVC, XLPE or armoured cables sized per IS 732 ampacity tables and voltage drop targets (typically ≤ 2 percent). Quality of cable selection, termination and routing determines whether the AC system delivers reliably for 25 years. Proper colour coding, earthing and protection coordination complete the AC system design.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AC cable in simple words?
The cable that carries electricity from the solar inverter to your distribution board and the grid meter. Same family as building wiring but sized for the inverter output.
What size AC cable for solar?
2.5 mm² for residential 1 kW. 4 mm² for 2 to 3 kW. 6 mm² for 5 kW. 10 mm² for 7 to 10 kW. Larger for C&I.
Single-phase or three-phase AC cable?
Single-phase: 2 cores plus earth. Three-phase: 4 cores plus earth. Match to inverter output configuration.
What type of insulation?
PVC (IS 694) is the basic standard. XLPE (IS 7098) for higher temperature. Armoured for buried runs.
How is AC cable sized?
Based on current capacity and voltage drop. Target voltage drop less than 2 to 3 percent.
What is the typical cost?
₹40 to ₹150 per meter for 2.5 mm² to 25 mm² Cu PVC. Higher for armoured or XLPE.
Cu or Al?
Cu is the Indian standard for AC up to 50 mm². Al is used in larger commercial and utility cables for cost reasons.
What is AC cable colour code?
Phase: red (R), yellow (Y), blue (B). Neutral: black. Earth: green. Indian convention.
Are AC cables BIS-certified?
Yes. IS 694 (PVC), IS 1554 (PVC armoured), IS 7098 (XLPE). BIS certification mandatory.
What is the voltage rating?
Typical LT cable: 1100 V or 1100 V/650 V. Sufficient for 230 V or 415 V AC.
Should AC cable run inside conduit?
Outdoor runs yes. Indoor concealed runs as per wiring code IS 732.
How long does AC cable last?
25 to 30 years for PVC. 40+ years for XLPE in protected installation.
What is the difference between AC and DC cable?
DC cable is rated for higher voltage (1500 V), UV-resistant, double-insulated. AC cable is sized for current and voltage drop with standard insulation.
