What is an IBC cell
IBC, Interdigitated Back Contact, is a solar cell architecture in which both the positive and negative electrical contacts are located on the rear surface of the cell, leaving the front surface completely clear. Conventional cells have busbars and fingers on the front that block 3-7 percent of incoming light. IBC eliminates this front-side shading, raising effective active area and cell efficiency.
The contacts are “interdigitated,” meaning the positive and negative contact regions are alternately arranged like the teeth of two interlocking combs on the back surface. This requires complex doping patterns on the rear (alternating p+ and n+ regions) and precise alignment of contact metallisation.
IBC achieves 23-26 percent cell efficiency, the highest among single-junction silicon cells in commercial production. SunPower (now Maxeon) is the historical leader. LG made IBC cells before exiting solar manufacturing in 2022. The complex manufacturing process keeps IBC in the premium segment with 20-50 percent price premium over standard PERC modules.
Why IBC matters
Highest module efficiency single-junction silicon. 23-26 percent cell efficiency commercial.
No front-side shading. Cleaner aesthetic and more active area.
Premium positioning. Long warranty (25-40 years) and premium pricing.
Space efficiency. More watts per square metre for space-constrained installations, the same trade-off homeowners weigh when picking higher-wattage modules in Solar Inverter for a 3 BHK Home, Real Sizing and Best Picks.
Aesthetic appeal. Uniform dark front surface.
How IBC works
- n-type wafer with rear-side doping pattern: alternating p+ and n+ regions.
- Tunnel oxide or passivation layer on rear.
- Metal contacts deposited on rear, alternating between p+ and n+ regions.
- Front side has only anti-reflective coating, completely clear.
- Charge carriers travel laterally within the cell to the rear contacts.
Technical deep dive
Cell architecture
| Layer | Material | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Anti-reflective coating | Light absorption |
| Bulk | n-type silicon | Light absorption |
| Rear passivation | SiO2 + SiNx or tunnel oxide | Surface passivation |
| Rear doping | Alternating p+ and n+ regions | Charge separation |
| Rear metallisation | Aluminium or silver | Contact |
Efficiency progression
| Year | IBC cell efficiency |
|---|---|
| 2014 | 24.0% (SunPower) |
| 2017 | 24.5% |
| 2020 | 25.0% |
| 2024 | 25.5% |
| Lab record | 26.7% (LONGi 2022) |
Comparison with other premium cells
| Cell | Module efficiency | Cost premium |
|---|---|---|
| PERC | 20-22% | Baseline |
| TOPCon | 22-23.5% | +5-10% |
| HJT | 23-24% | +15-25% |
| IBC | 23-24.5% | +20-50% |
Temperature coefficient
IBC: -0.27 to -0.30 %/°C. Better than PERC, comparable to TOPCon.
Degradation
IBC: 0.30-0.40 percent annual module degradation. 25-year retention 88-92 percent.
Real-world applications
Premium residential rooftop in space-constrained locations, where SurgePV’s residential solar design tools help model the higher-wattage layout IBC modules make possible on a small roof.
EV solar (vehicle-integrated).
Space and aerospace.
Marine solar.
Off-grid expedition power.
Architectural integration where aesthetics matter, an area Heaven Designs’ rooftop detailed engineering work often accounts for when the module choice is visible from the street.
Advantages
Highest single-junction silicon efficiency.
No front-side shading.
Long warranty (often 25-40 years).
Excellent temperature performance.
Low degradation.
Aesthetic appeal.
Limitations
20-50 percent price premium over PERC.
Complex manufacturing.
Limited Indian availability.
Lower bifaciality than HJT.
Difficult to make in larger formats.
Indian market context
Limited IBC availability in India, though buyers evaluating premium panels for a rooftop should still confirm the model appears on the ALMM List before committing.
Maxeon distributes through partners.
Premium installations may source IBC through specialty channels.
Cost premium limits mainstream adoption.
Standards and certifications

Key takeaways
IBC (Interdigitated Back Contact) cells place all contacts on the rear surface, eliminating front-side shading and achieving the highest single-junction silicon efficiency in commercial production. SunPower/Maxeon is the historical leader. Premium technology with 20-50 percent price premium. Indian availability is limited. Likely to remain premium niche rather than mainstream.
