PERC Cell

Quick Definition

PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact) is a solar cell architecture that adds a passivated rear contact layer to capture light that would otherwise pass through. It raised crystalline silicon efficiency by 1 to 2 percentage points and was the dominant cell technology for solar modules from 2017 to 2024.

What is a PERC cell

PERC, Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact, is a crystalline silicon solar cell architecture that adds a passivated dielectric layer at the rear of the cell. The layer serves two functions: it reflects unabsorbed light back into the silicon for a second chance at absorption, and it reduces the recombination of charge carriers at the rear surface. Together these effects raise cell open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current, lifting efficiency by 1 to 2 percentage points over standard back-contact cells.

PERC was the dominant cell technology globally and in India from roughly 2017 to 2024. It enabled the rapid efficiency progression that brought mono crystalline modules from 17 to 22 percent. From 2023 onward, TOPCon has progressively replaced PERC in new gigawatt-scale manufacturing capacity, with HJT entering the premium segment.

In Indian manufacturing, PERC remains the dominant installed cell base but new capacity additions are increasingly TOPCon. Most ALMM-listed modules in 2026 are PERC, with TOPCon listings growing rapidly.

PERC explained simply

A standard solar cell has the front side designed to absorb light and the back side as a plain conductor. Some light slips through the silicon without being absorbed. In PERC, the back side gets a thin reflective and passivating layer. Light that would otherwise be lost bounces back into the silicon. Electrons that would otherwise recombine at the rear stay alive longer.

The result: 1 to 2 percent more electricity from the same cell area. Multiplied across a 5 kW rooftop system or a 100 MW plant, that is real money.

Why PERC matters

Efficiency uplift. The 1 to 2 percentage point gain over previous technology unlocked sub-22 percent module efficiency at commodity prices.

Mass commercialisation. The architecture is compatible with existing PECVD and printing equipment, allowing rapid retooling.

Bifacial enabler. The rear passivation layer is intrinsically transparent enough to support bifacial operation.

Cost trajectory. PERC drove industry cost-per-watt below ₹15 at the wholesale level.

Indian manufacturing base. Most Indian module factories were built around PERC. The transition to TOPCon is now underway.

How PERC works

A standard front contact cell:

  1. Light absorbed in n-type doped silicon (front).
  2. Junction at p-n boundary separates electrons and holes.
  3. Electrons collected at front contact.
  4. Holes collected at rear aluminium contact (full-area aluminium back surface field).
  5. Charges flow through external circuit.

PERC adds rear passivation:

  1. Light absorbed as before.
  2. Junction separates carriers.
  3. Light not absorbed reaches the rear.
  4. Dielectric layer (Al2O3 + SiNx) reflects light back and reduces recombination.
  5. Holes collected through laser-opened contact points in the dielectric.
  6. The narrower contact area reduces shading and improves efficiency.

Bifacial PERC

PERC cells are intrinsically capable of bifacial operation, with bifaciality factors of 70 to 80 percent. Most Indian utility-scale modules from 2020 to 2024 were bifacial PERC.

Indian market context

Mono PERC dominated Indian module manufacturing from 2020 to 2024. Major Indian manufacturers including Waaree, Adani Green Solar, Tata Power Solar, Vikram Solar and Goldi Solar built capacity around PERC.

PLI scheme tranches encouraged transition to TOPCon. New Indian gigawatt-scale capacity additions in 2024 to 2026 are TOPCon-first.

ALMM List I includes both PERC and TOPCon modules from major Indian manufacturers.

Common mistakes

Choosing PERC over TOPCon to save 5 percent capex on a 25-year asset. The lifecycle ROI favours TOPCon.

Ignoring LeTID test certification on PERC modules.

Mixing PERC and TOPCon in the same string.

Skipping bifaciality factor verification for bifacial PERC.

Trusting nameplate Pmax without positive power tolerance check.

Not auditing module IV curves at commissioning.

Key takeaways

PERC was the dominant solar cell architecture from 2017 to 2024 and remains a major installed base. The architecture added rear passivation to lift cell efficiency by 1 to 2 percentage points. TOPCon has progressively replaced PERC for new manufacturing capacity. For Indian solar projects through 2026, PERC remains a credible cost-effective choice; TOPCon is the future-proof option.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PERC in simple words?
A solar cell design that adds a reflective and electrically passivating layer behind the silicon. Light that misses the front goes through, bounces off the back layer, and gets a second chance to be absorbed.
What does PERC stand for?
Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact.
Is PERC the same as mono?
No. PERC is a cell architecture. Mono is a silicon type. PERC cells can be built from both mono and poly silicon, though mono PERC is now dominant.
What is the efficiency of PERC cells?
Mono PERC cells reach 22 to 23 percent at the cell level, 20 to 22 percent at the module level.
PERC vs TOPCon, which is better?
TOPCon delivers 1 to 1.5 percentage points more efficiency, better temperature performance and lower degradation. PERC remains lower cost. New installations are shifting to TOPCon.
Are PERC modules still being made?
Yes, in large volumes. PERC remains a cost-effective workhorse for cost-sensitive segments. New gigawatt-scale lines are increasingly TOPCon.
Is PERC affected by LID?
Yes, but modern PERC controls LID well. LeTID (light + elevated temperature induced degradation) was a concern with early PERC and has been addressed in modern modules.
Is PERC bifacial-compatible?
Yes. PERC plus transparent rear glass gives bifacial PERC modules with 70 to 80 percent bifaciality factor.
Are PERC modules ALMM-listed?
Yes, widely. Most Indian manufacturers list mono PERC as their primary product alongside emerging TOPCon.
How long do PERC modules last?
25 to 30 years. Annual linear degradation of 0.45 to 0.55 percent. Most warrant 84 to 87 percent retention at year 25.
What is the temperature coefficient of PERC?
Approximately -0.34 to -0.37 percent per degree Celsius at Pmax.
When was PERC introduced?
Concept proposed in 1989, mass-commercialised from 2014 onward. Dominant from 2017 to 2024.
What is rear passivation?
A thin dielectric layer (typically Al2O3 plus SiNx) at the rear of the cell that reduces electron recombination, raising open-circuit voltage.
Are PERC cells single-side or bifacial?
PERC cells are intrinsically capable of bifacial operation. Whether a module is bifacial depends on the back sheet or back glass.
Why has PERC declined?
TOPCon delivers better efficiency at similar cost as Chinese and Indian fab capacity moved to TOPCon from 2023 onward.
