What is n-type silicon
N-type silicon is crystalline silicon intentionally doped with a small concentration of phosphorus atoms (typically 10^14 to 10^16 atoms/cm³). The phosphorus atoms have five valence electrons (one more than silicon’s four), and the extra electron becomes a free charge carrier. The result: silicon with an excess of free electrons (n for negative).
N-type silicon serves as the base material for high-efficiency solar cells including TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact), HJT (Heterojunction Technology) and IBC (Interdigitated Back Contact). Compared to p-type silicon (boron-doped, with hole carriers), n-type offers higher minority carrier lifetime, elimination of boron-oxygen light-induced degradation (LID), and better high-temperature performance.
The Indian solar industry’s transition from p-type PERC to n-type TOPCon (2024 onward) and HJT (emerging premium segment) reflects the broader global shift toward n-type silicon as the foundation for next-generation high-efficiency PV.
Why n-type matters
Higher efficiency. N-type bulk lifetime supports cell efficiencies of 24-26 percent vs 22-23 percent for p-type PERC.
No LID. Eliminates the boron-oxygen defect mechanism causing first-year degradation in p-type.
Better temperature performance. Lower temperature coefficient, which shows up as measurable yield gains in Indian heat (see Solar Yield in India, kWh-per-kW Benchmarks by State).
Bifacial leadership. HJT n-type achieves 90-95 percent bifaciality factor.
Future-ready. Foundation for tandem cells and beyond.
How n-type works
- Czochralski crystal growth with phosphorus dopant added to silicon melt.
- Single crystal ingot grown by slow pulling from melt.
- Ingot sliced into thin wafers (150-180 microns).
- Wafers processed through cell manufacturing (diffusion, deposition, metallisation).
- Final cell has n-type base with appropriate junction structures.
Technical deep dive
Comparison: n-type vs p-type
| Property | N-type | P-type |
|---|---|---|
| Dopant | Phosphorus | Boron |
| Charge carriers | Electrons | Holes |
| LID | None (no B-O) | Significant (1-2.5%) |
| LeTID | Minimal | Present in PERC |
| Bulk lifetime | Higher | Lower |
| Temperature coefficient | Better (-0.30%/°C) | Standard (-0.36%/°C) |
| Cost premium | 3-8% wafer | Baseline |
| Use in cells | TOPCon, HJT, IBC | PERC, BSF, older |
Doping levels
| Carrier concentration | Resistivity range |
|---|---|
| Lightly doped (10^14-10^15) | 10-100 Ω·cm |
| Moderately doped (10^15-10^16) | 1-10 Ω·cm |
| Heavily doped (10^16+) | <1 Ω·cm |
PV cells use lightly to moderately doped n-type for the base.
Cell technology pairing
| Cell | Base | Emitter |
|---|---|---|
| PERC | p-type | n-type front |
| n-PERC | n-type | p-type front |
| TOPCon | n-type | p-type front + n+ poly rear |
| HJT | n-type | a-Si layers both sides |
| IBC | n-type | Both polarities on rear |

Key takeaways
N-type silicon is phosphorus-doped silicon serving as the base material for high-efficiency TOPCon, HJT and IBC solar cells. Higher minority carrier lifetime, no boron-oxygen LID and better temperature performance make n-type the foundation for next-generation PV. Indian solar is transitioning from p-type PERC to n-type TOPCon and HJT for new manufacturing capacity. Cost premium is narrowing as scale increases.
