ALMM and inverter compliance: MNRE’s current ALMM page publishes solar PV module and cell lists, not an inverter list. Verify the inverter’s exact model documents and applicable scheme or DISCOM requirements separately.
Electricity bills crossing ₹8,000 per month have pushed thousands of Indian homeowners into a familiar search loop: find a good solar system, check subsidy eligibility, and then hit the question of financing. HDFC Bank, with a home loan relationship with millions of Indians, is a natural first stop. Yet the search results for “HDFC solar loan” tend to surface generic personal loan pages, leaving applicants confused about which product actually applies. This guide sticks to what HDFC Bank’s own pages show, read on 14 October 2026.
Direct answer. HDFC Bank’s pages show no dedicated solar loan, so an HDFC solar purchase is financed with its Personal Loan, advertised from 9.99% per annum, or an arrangement agreed with the bank against an existing home loan. SBI’s own page lists 5.75% up to ₹2 lakh and 7.90% above ₹2 lakh up to ₹6 lakh for PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar, and IREDA lists no household loan. HDFC’s strength is convenience for an existing customer, not rate.
Understanding which product applies to your situation is the most important decision before you call the bank, and the rate is only one of the points to compare.
| Lender | Product on its own page | Published rate and terms |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank | No solar-specific loan; the Personal Loan is the route | Personal Loan advertised from 9.99% p.a. (calculator range 9.99% to 24%), tenure 1 to 7 years; HDFC Bank |
| IREDA | No household loan; rooftop solar scheme is for industrial, commercial and institutional borrowers | No household rate; rates are set by borrower grade in IREDA’s interest-rate matrix; IREDA schemes page |
| SBI | SBI Surya Ghar loan (PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar, up to 10 kW) | 5.75% p.a. up to ₹2 lakh; 7.90% p.a. above ₹2 lakh up to ₹6 lakh; floating, EBLR-linked; rates as on 15 December 2025, page updated 13 February 2026; up to 120 months including a 6-month moratorium; processing fee nil; SBI |
Does HDFC Have a Green Home Loan for Solar?
Older articles, including an earlier version of this guide, described an HDFC “Green Home Loan” for solar. We found no such product on HDFC Bank’s own pages. The personal loan page (read 14 October 2026) mentions no solar or green loan. The home loan page mentions top-up loans (maximum tenure of 15 years or retirement age, whichever is lower) but gives no top-up rate and no solar use. It states that home loan pricing is benchmarked to the policy repo rate. Where an HDFC branch is willing to finance a solar system through a home loan top-up, treat it as a bank-specific arrangement and get the rate, tenure and fees in writing before you rely on it.
HDFC Personal Loan: The Published Route
HDFC’s Personal Loan page advertises “starting at 9.99%” with loans of up to ₹1 crore, and its EMI calculator ranges from 9.99% to 24% per annum and from 1 to 7 years. The page does not state a solar-specific limit or fee in the part we could read. The rate you are offered depends on your profile, so the advertised starting rate is a floor, not a promise.

HDFC Solar Loan Eligibility Criteria
HDFC Bank’s pages we read give no solar-specific eligibility rules, so the points below are the general ones to confirm with the bank. Do not treat them as HDFC’s published criteria.
- Age and income: set by the bank for the Personal Loan; ask for the current minimums.
- Credit score: lenders look at your CIBIL score; a stronger score usually gets better pricing, and the advertised 9.99% is a starting rate.
- Employment or business history: salaried and self-employed applicants are assessed differently; ask for the documents the bank wants.
- Property ownership: not required for a personal loan, but required for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy and DISCOM approval, which are tied to the roof and the connection.
- Existing HDFC relationship: may make processing easier for an existing customer; ask the branch.
Documentation to Gather
Gathering documents in advance cuts delay. HDFC does not publish a solar-specific checklist in the pages we read, so ask the bank for its current list and gather these in the meantime:
KYC and Identity
- PAN card and Aadhaar card.
Income and Financial Documents
- Salary slips (salaried) or income tax returns (self-employed), as the bank specifies.
- Bank statements for the period the bank asks.
Solar-Specific Documents
- Itemised vendor quotation with the vendor’s GST details, naming ALMM-listed modules and the exact inverter model.
- PM Surya Ghar registration and DISCOM approval for the subsidy route.
- Empanelment proof of the installer on the PM Surya Ghar portal.
Loan Rate Comparison: SBI vs IREDA vs HDFC Bank
The central question is which lender is actually cheapest for solar financing. On what each lender publishes, SBI’s PM Surya Ghar loan is the lowest-rate published route for a homeowner, IREDA has no household product, and HDFC’s Personal Loan starts higher. The comparison is limited to what each page showed on 14 October 2026; rates float.
| Lender | Product | Published rate | Tenure | Processing fee | Household solar product |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank | Personal Loan | From 9.99% p.a. (range 9.99% to 24%) | 1 to 7 years | Not stated in the part read | No solar-specific product |
| IREDA | Rooftop solar scheme for industrial, commercial and institutional borrowers | No household rate | See scheme document | See scheme document | No |
| SBI | SBI Surya Ghar loan | 5.75% up to ₹2 lakh; 7.90% above ₹2 lakh up to ₹6 lakh (as on 15 December 2025) | Up to 120 months including moratorium | Nil | Yes |
Other banks (for example Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and Indian Bank) also lend for PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar. This guide quotes no rate for them because their own pages were not read; check each bank’s page.
A Concrete EMI Comparison on a ₹3 Lakh Loan
Assume a ₹3,00,000 loan. The rates are the ones in the table above; HDFC’s 9.99% is the advertised starting rate.
| Lender and rate | Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total Interest Paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI, 7.90% | 5 years | ₹6,069 | ₹64,114 |
| SBI, 7.90% | 7 years | ₹4,661 | ₹91,518 |
| HDFC Personal Loan, 9.99% | 5 years | ₹6,373 | ₹82,358 |
| HDFC Personal Loan, 9.99% | 7 years | ₹4,979 | ₹1,18,220 |
On a loan of ₹2,00,000 or less, SBI’s page lists 5.75%, which on ₹2,00,000 over 5 years costs about ₹30,601 in interest against about ₹54,905 at 9.99% (calculated). The gap widens with the tenure, so rate matters more than convenience when you can qualify for the lower-rate loan.
The HDFC Solar Loan Decision Tree
The HDFC Solar Loan Decision Tree
Before working through the loan amount question, confirm the system size and payback assumptions with a solar cost and savings calculator. The loan amount should match what the roof and consumption profile justify, not just what a vendor quotes.
This framework helps you decide where to start in four questions:
-
Is your loan likely to be ₹2 lakh or less?
- Yes → read SBI’s page first: 5.75% published, no minimum CIBIL score on the page, nil processing fee.
- No → go to question 2.
-
Is your loan between ₹2 lakh and ₹6 lakh, with a CIBIL score of 650+ and net annual income of ₹3 lakh+?
- Yes → SBI’s 7.90% slab applies on its page; compare it with the written offer from HDFC.
- No → go to question 3.
-
Are you an existing HDFC customer who needs unsecured credit quickly?
- Yes → ask HDFC for the Personal Loan offer in writing and compare the total interest with SBI’s.
- No → compare at least two lenders’ written offers.
-
Do you own or have permission for the roof?
- Yes → proceed with PM Surya Ghar registration and DISCOM approval.
- No → rooftop solar on rented property needs the owner’s permission first.
If you land on SBI or IREDA after this tree, read the linked guides (IREDA solar loan guide and SBI solar loan guide) before making a final call.
How to Apply for an HDFC Solar Loan: Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Assess Eligibility Check your CIBIL score before applying and decide which lender’s offer you will compare against.
Step 2: Collect Documents Assemble the KYC, income and solar-specific documents listed earlier. Incomplete documentation is a common cause of delay.
Step 3: Get a Solar Quotation from an Empanelled Vendor For PM Surya Ghar subsidy compatibility, the vendor must be empanelled on the PM Surya Ghar portal. Request an itemised quotation with GST-registered details. Check our PM Surya Ghar empanelled vendor guide for how to verify vendor status.
Step 4: Submit Application Apply at the HDFC branch, in the HDFC Bank app or online. Say plainly that the purpose is rooftop solar so the application is routed correctly, and ask for the rate and fees in writing.
Step 5: Sanction and Disbursement On approval, HDFC issues a sanction letter. Ask how funds will go to the vendor and keep the letter that shows the rate, tenure and fees.
Step 6: Solar Installation and Subsidy Application The empanelled vendor installs the residential solar system, applies for net metering via the state DISCOM, and registers the installation on the PM Surya Ghar portal. After DISCOM verification, the subsidy is credited to the homeowner’s bank account.
Step 7: Prepay with Subsidy Once the subsidy is credited, ask whether you can make a lump-sum prepayment and whether any foreclosure or part-payment charge applies to your loan.
Common Mistakes When Applying for HDFC Solar Loan
- Assuming a Green Home Loan exists for solar: HDFC’s pages show no such product; ask the bank to name the exact product and give the rate in writing.
- Not comparing: on ₹2,00,000 over 5 years, the published SBI rate costs about ₹24,300 less interest than 9.99% (both calculated). Check at least two lenders.
- Missing vendor GST details: HDFC requires a proper invoice for disbursement; installers without formal registration complicate this.
- Not mentioning subsidy integration: tell the loan team that the subsidy credit will be used for prepayment so they can note it on the account.
- Low CIBIL score at application: a low score can mean higher pricing or rejection. Check your score before you apply.
- Not verifying the vendor: an installer who is not empanelled on the PM Surya Ghar portal means the subsidy application cannot proceed, which removes a large part of the financial benefit.

Integrating PM Surya Ghar Subsidy with an HDFC Loan
The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above, paid after the DISCOM verifies the installation. The subsidy is capped, so the net amount you finance grows with the system size.
| System Size | Central Subsidy | Net amount to finance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | Your quotation minus ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | Your quotation minus ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 | Your quotation minus ₹78,000 |
| 5 kW | ₹78,000 | Your quotation minus ₹78,000 |
| 10 kW | ₹78,000 | Your quotation minus ₹78,000 |
This guide quotes no system price because no dated source supports a single figure; use your itemised quotation. State-level top-ups vary by state, so check your state nodal agency for current figures; none is assumed here. Remember that the bank lends against the quotation first and the subsidy arrives later.
Where Qbits Fits
Qbits is an inverter manufacturer; it does not lend or install systems. Homeowners who finalise their loan and choose an installer should pair the financing with an inverter whose written warranty and service route they have confirmed for the exact model, because the loan tenure can run for several years.
- Hybrid Inverters: Review current QBH model documents and confirm the exact battery, firmware, PV, backup-output, transfer, communication, warranty and project requirements in writing.
- String Sizing Calculator: confirm panel-string compatibility before the installer quotes, so the system is correctly designed from day one.
- Authorised Service Partners: Search the current directory, then confirm partner status, location coverage, service scope, response process and fees in writing.
Contact Qbits with questions about an inverter model named in a quote. Installers can apply through become our partner.
