Qbits warranty and service terms: Qbits public datasheets describe an expandable warranty but do not define a universal duration, remedy, registration deadline, service SLA, or exclusions. Obtain the current written terms for the exact model and sale before relying on a headline claim.
ALMM and inverter compliance: MNRE’s current ALMM page publishes solar PV module and cell lists, not an inverter list. Verify the inverter’s exact model documents and applicable scheme or DISCOM requirements separately.
At ₹10,000+ a month in electricity bills, solar stops being a lifestyle choice. It’s a financial obligation. A 10kW system is the entry point for large Indian homes (villas, bungalows, farmhouses) and small commercial premises. It generates enough to actually wipe out most of the DISCOM bill.
10kW is also where pricing gets more complex. Three-phase options enter. Commercial buyers get a different subsidy structure (accelerated depreciation instead of PM Surya Ghar). Inverter selection matters more for long-term performance.
Short version. As of 14 October 2026, MNRE’s residential benchmark for a 10 kWp system is ₹4,60,000, and no sourced national price range exists beyond dated listings. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 for residential buyers. Commercial buyers aren’t eligible for PM Surya Ghar but can claim 40% accelerated depreciation under Section 32. Applying the True Cost of Going Solar framework across five cost components, payback on the worked inputs below lands between about 2.5 and 4.7 years depending on tariff and buyer category.
The True Cost of Going Solar: 10kW Edition
The True Cost of Going Solar framework applies identically to a 10kW system as to smaller sizes, five components, all verifiable before you sign:
- Solar panels (₹/Wp): At 10,000 Wp, panels are the largest line. Dated retail listings checked 14 October 2026 (detail in our solar panel price guide) ran ₹18.53 to ₹18.73 per watt for non-DCR panels (Waaree store, taxes included), which is ₹1,85,300 to ₹1,87,300 for 10,000 Wp, and ₹20.97 to ₹40.74 per watt for DCR panels (Luminous, Waaree, Adani and other listings), which is ₹2,09,700 to ₹4,07,400. A subsidised residential system needs DCR modules; a commercial buyer does not.
- Inverter: Listings checked 14 October 2026 for a 10kW three-phase on-grid string inverter: ₹56,999 (UTL via Solar World, tax included, showed sold out) and ₹61,800 (Loom Solar Fusion 10 kW, tax status not stated). For 10 kW hybrid inverters, the listings in our hybrid inverter price guide ran ₹1,41,750 (Devsol) to ₹2,57,999 (Deye via Enlead Energy) on 14 October 2026.
- Balance of System (BOS): Heavier mounting structure (10kW carries 16 to 18 panels at 550 to 600 W), longer cable runs, larger combiner box, three-phase-rated SPDs, and earthing system. We found no dated source for a 10 kW BOS cost, so get it as a separate line in your quote.
- Installation and commissioning: Labour for the array, structural work, DISCOM three-phase meter application. We found no dated source for this line either; ask for it itemised.
- GST: the 12% slab no longer exists (Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate), effective 22 September 2025). Renewable energy devices sit at 5% under Schedule I entry 437, heading 8504 static converters at 18%, and a bundled turnkey contract uses the 70:30 split for an 8.9% effective rate (0.70 × 5% + 0.30 × 18%). That is about ₹8,900 of GST per ₹1,00,000 of pre-tax contract value. Confirm the entry your supplier relies on.

The benchmark is a planning and subsidy reference for a grid-connected system without battery. Your contract price is negotiated, so replace these with your own quotes.
40%. The accelerated depreciation rate available to commercial solar buyers under Section 32 of the Income Tax Act (plant and machinery category). On an illustrative ₹4,60,000 system, the year-1 tax saving at a 31.2% effective rate is approximately ₹57,400 (₹4,60,000 × 40% × 31.2%), further improving commercial payback. Basis: Rule 5 and Appendix I of the Income-tax Rules, 1962 (renewable energy devices block, 40% on written-down value) as commonly stated in solar tax guides; confirm the rate and your eligibility with your chartered accountant, because the rules have been renumbered.

Residential vs Commercial Use: Key Differences at 10kW
Residential 10kW (Large Villa or Bungalow)
A large villa with 3 or more air conditioners, a swimming pool pump, water heater, EV charging, and full household loads typically consumes 900 to 1,500 units per month. A 10kW on-grid system generating 40 to 50 kWh/day produces 1,200 to 1,500 units per month, enough to offset the entire bill in most months.
The single-phase vs three-phase choice depends on the home’s power supply:
- If your home has a single-phase connection (most 2–3 BHK homes), a single-phase 10kW inverter is required.
- If your home has a three-phase connection (most large villas and bungalows above 7.5kW sanctioned load), a three-phase 10kW inverter distributes generation across all phases and reduces cable losses.
Small Commercial (Shops, Clinics, Offices, Schools)
Commercial tariffs differ by state and category and are usually higher than residential ones; this guide assumes ₹10 per unit for illustration, so replace it with your own bill. A 10kW system at ₹10/unit generating 45 kWh/day saves ₹1,64,250 per year, far faster payback than residential.
Commercial buyers do not qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy but benefit from:
- 40% accelerated depreciation under Section 32 (plant and machinery)
- Net metering or gross metering depending on state SERC policy
- Input tax credit (ITC) on GST if the business is GST-registered
The solar inverter depreciation tax benefits guide explains how to claim these benefits.
Three-Phase 10kW System: When You Need It
ITC (Accelerated Depreciation) Benefit for Commercial 10kW Buyers
This benefit is frequently overlooked and can dramatically change the economics of a commercial 10kW system:
The Accelerated Depreciation Calculation
- System cost (illustrative basis): ₹4,60,000, the MNRE 10 kWp benchmark used as a stand-in for a quote
- Depreciation rate: 40% on the written-down value, first year
- First-year depreciation amount: ₹4,60,000 × 40% = ₹1,84,000
- Tax saving (at 31.2% effective tax rate): ₹1,84,000 × 31.2% = ₹57,408
- Effective net cost after tax benefit: ₹4,60,000 − ₹57,408 = ₹4,02,592
In subsequent years, depreciation continues on the reducing balance. Over 5 years the cumulative deduction is ₹4,60,000 × (1 − 0.60^5) = about ₹4,24,200, which is about ₹1,32,300 of tax saving at 31.2% and about ₹1,06,800 at 25.17%. This holds only if the business has taxable profit to absorb the deduction, and the first-year rate is halved when the plant is used for fewer than 180 days in the year. This benefit is governed by Section 32 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and the depreciation rates in the Income-tax Rules, and applies to entities with business or professional income; confirm the current rate and your eligibility with your chartered accountant.
For proprietary firms and partnership firms, the benefit is computed at the applicable income tax slab (up to 30%). For private limited companies, the corporate tax rate (25.17% for turnover below ₹400 Cr) applies.
10kW Solar System Payback Period
All three cases use the same assumed generation and the ₹4,60,000 benchmark as an illustrative cost. Tariffs of ₹5, ₹7 and ₹10 per unit are assumptions, so substitute your own bill. Formula: payback (years) = net cost ÷ (annual units × tariff).
Residential at ₹7/unit:
- Daily generation: 45 kWh (assumed, 10 kWp × 4.5 kWh per kWp per day)
- Annual generation: 45 × 365 = 16,425 kWh
- Annual savings: 16,425 × ₹7 = ₹1,14,975
- Net cost after ₹78,000 subsidy: ₹4,60,000 − ₹78,000 = ₹3,82,000
- Payback: ₹3,82,000 ÷ ₹1,14,975 = 3.3 years
Commercial at ₹10/unit:
- Annual savings: 16,425 × ₹10 = ₹1,64,250
- Effective net cost after AD benefit: ₹4,02,592
- Payback: ₹4,02,592 ÷ ₹1,64,250 = 2.5 years
Residential at ₹5/unit (lower tariff states):
- Annual savings: 16,425 × ₹5 = ₹82,125
- Net cost: ₹3,82,000
- Payback: ₹3,82,000 ÷ ₹82,125 = 4.7 years
On these assumptions the economics are strong for most buyers, though they depend entirely on the tariff and the quote. The full payback methodology with degradation adjustment is in the solar payback period guide.
What Loads a 10kW System Handles
A 10kW system running 45 kWh/day can power the following simultaneously during peak solar hours:
- 3 × 1.5-ton inverter ACs (1,350 W each): 4,050 W
- Swimming pool pump (1 HP): 750 W
- Refrigerator (400L): 220 W
- Electric water heater (2kW): 2,000 W
- Washing machine + dryer: 1,500 W
- EV charger (slow, 3.3kW): 3,300 W
- Fans × 8 + lights × 20: 900 W
- Total peak simultaneous load: ~12,720 W
With a 10kW inverter, you can comfortably run 7,000–9,000 W of actual load simultaneously, which covers all of the above except the EV charger (or run the EV charger when the ACs are off). This is the practical operating reality, not all loads run simultaneously.
State-Wise 10kW Solar System Price in India 2026
We found no dated, sourced state-level price data for a 10kW system, so this guide does not publish state price ranges or rank states by price. Quotes differ with installer competition, logistics, structure design and the DISCOM’s process, so collect at least two itemised quotes from vendors registered in your state.
Use the MNRE benchmark of ₹4,60,000 less the ₹78,000 central assistance, which leaves ₹3,82,000, as a scheme reference only; your quote will differ. Some states add their own top-ups on the central subsidy; amounts and eligibility vary, so verify current state subsidy availability at MNRE’s PM Surya Ghar portal{target=“_blank” rel=“noopener”}.
For comparison with smaller system sizes and their pricing, read the 5kW solar system price guide and the 3kW solar system price guide.
Common Mistakes in 10kW System Purchases
-
Choosing a single-phase inverter for a three-phase home: This causes phase imbalance and may trigger DISCOM penalties. Confirm your connection type before purchasing.
-
Skipping structural engineering: A 20-panel mounting structure on an RCC terrace carries 500+ kg. Get a structural certification from a licensed engineer, firms offering dedicated structural and civil engineering for rooftop solar can provide this as a standalone service.
-
Not claiming accelerated depreciation: Commercial buyers who miss this benefit forgo about ₹57,000 in year one on the ₹4,60,000 worked example, and more over later years. File with your CA in the same year as installation.
-
No shade analysis: A 10kW system on a partially shaded terrace can underperform a 7kW system by 20%. Shading analysis is non-negotiable at this investment level, and dedicated shading analysis tools used by professional designers model tree and structure shadows hour-by-hour across the year rather than relying on a single site visit. NREL tools for shade analysis and satellite-based irradiance software are now standard practice for reputable installers in India.
