Rapid Shutdown

Quick Definition

Rapid shutdown is a safety function that de-energises rooftop solar PV conductors to a safe voltage within a defined time when triggered by emergency switch or AC removal. Mandatory under US NEC 690.12; voluntary in India. Implemented through microinverters, DC optimisers or dedicated rapid shutdown devices.

What is rapid shutdown

Rapid shutdown is a solar PV safety function that de-energises rooftop conductors to a defined safe voltage within a specified time when triggered. The function is mandatory under US National Electrical Code (NEC) 690.12, requiring conductors outside the array boundary to reach less than 30 V within 30 seconds and conductors within the array to reach less than 80 V per panel (or less than 1 V for module-level compliance) within the same time.

Rapid shutdown protects firefighters, emergency responders and maintenance personnel from exposure to high-voltage DC on rooftops during emergencies or service. Without rapid shutdown, rooftop string DC voltage may remain at full 300-600 V even after AC supply is disconnected, because PV modules continue generating in sunlight.

For Indian solar, rapid shutdown is not mandatory under current regulations (CEA Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply Regulations 2023). Adoption is voluntary, primarily in premium residential and commercial installations that prioritise safety or follow international best practice.

Why rapid shutdown matters

Firefighter safety. Roof access during fires requires de-energised DC.

Service safety. Maintenance and replacement work safer with low DC voltage.

Insurance. Some insurers favour rapid shutdown-equipped installations.

International best practice. US, Australia and emerging European requirements.

Future regulatory alignment. India may adopt requirement.

Implementation methods

Four ways to implement rapid shutdown
MethodDescription
MicroinverterEach panel produces AC; DC effectively eliminated
DC optimiserOptimiser de-energises DC output on signal
Module-level rapid shutdown deviceDedicated device per module (Tigo TS4-O, others)
Inverter-levelCentralised at inverter; less compliant for module-level rules

Systems built around microinverters or DC optimisers, collectively known as module-level power electronics (MLPE), achieve rapid shutdown compliance natively. Plain string inverter systems need a retrofit device. Our string inverter vs microinverter comparison covers the wider cost and reliability tradeoff between the two approaches.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is rapid shutdown in simple words?
A safety feature that quickly drops rooftop solar DC voltage to a safe level when an emergency switch is hit or when AC power is disconnected, protecting firefighters and emergency responders.
Is rapid shutdown required in India?
Not mandatory under Indian regulations. CEA Measures Relating to Safety do not specifically require it. Adoption is voluntary.
What is NEC 690.12?
US National Electrical Code section requiring rapid shutdown for rooftop solar. Mandatory in US installations.
How fast does rapid shutdown work?
Conductors must reach safe voltage (less than 80 V per panel, less than 30 V at array boundary) within 30 seconds of trigger.
How is rapid shutdown implemented?
Microinverters, DC optimisers with rapid shutdown capability, or dedicated module-level rapid shutdown devices (e.g., Tigo TS4-O).
Why is rapid shutdown needed?
Firefighters cutting AC supply expect roof DC to be safe. Without rapid shutdown, DC voltage on rooftop may remain at full string voltage (300-600 V) during emergency.
What is the trigger mechanism?
Loss of AC power, emergency switch operation, fire alarm, manual button.
Are string inverters rapid shutdown capable?
Standard string inverters: no. Special rapid shutdown devices retrofit string systems for compliance.
How much does rapid shutdown cost?
Microinverter and DC optimiser systems include it as standard. Retrofit rapid shutdown devices: ₹500-₹2,000 per module.
What is module-level shutdown?
Each module's DC voltage drops to less than 1 V when triggered. Most restrictive interpretation of rapid shutdown.
Are AC modules rapid shutdown compliant?
Yes. AC modules with integrated microinverters comply automatically.
Will rapid shutdown become mandatory in India?
Possible. CEA review of solar safety may incorporate rapid shutdown in future amendments.
Is rapid shutdown safer for installers?
Yes. Roof access for maintenance benefits from rapid shutdown reducing exposure to high DC.
Does rapid shutdown affect performance?
No. Normal operation unaffected. Triggered only on AC loss or emergency.
What is array boundary?
Per NEC 690.12, 1 foot (0.3 m) around the array. Voltage outside this must be less than 30 V.
