What is a micro inverter
A micro inverter is a small solar inverter mounted directly under each PV module. Each unit converts the DC output of a single panel into grid-quality AC at the panel itself. The output trunk carries AC, not DC, from the array to the home distribution board.
It is a member of the module-level power electronics family, which also includes DC optimisers and AC modules. The defining characteristic is that conversion happens at the module, not at a centralised inverter on a wall.
In Indian residential solar, micro inverters are a niche segment, perhaps 3 to 5 percent of new installations as of 2025. The niche grows where roofs are complex, shading is unavoidable, panel-level monitoring matters, or rooftop DC voltage is a safety concern. Enphase is the dominant brand in India, with Hoymiles and APsystems also active.
Micro inverter explained simply
Picture a small black box about the size of a paperback bolted under each solar panel. Each box does its own conversion. The roof never carries high-voltage DC. The wires running to the house already carry normal AC.
If a tree shades one panel, only that panel produces less. The other panels keep going at full output, because each one has its own little inverter doing its own MPPT. On a string inverter, one shaded panel slows down the whole row.
The trade-off is cost and the number of devices on the roof. Twelve panels mean twelve micro inverters and twelve more electronic components that could one day need replacement.
Why micro inverters matter
Shade tolerance. Indian rooftops often have water tanks, antennas, chimneys, parapet walls and neighbouring buildings casting shade for part of the day. Micro inverters recover 5 to 25 percent more energy on such roofs, which is why a proper shading analysis is worth doing before choosing a topology.
Safer DC. Roof DC voltage is capped at one panel’s Voc, usually 40 to 50 V. This eliminates DC arc-fault risk. Rapid shutdown compliance, important in US and Australian markets, is intrinsic.
Granular monitoring. Each panel reports its production to the cloud. A failed panel, a soiled panel or a bird-droppings problem is visible in the app within hours, not months.
Scalability. Start small and add panels later. There is no need to oversize an inverter for future expansion. Each new panel comes with its own inverter.
Premium positioning. For installers serving high-end residential customers, micro inverter systems carry a premium price and a 25-year warranty story.
How a micro inverter works
Each micro inverter performs the same five functions as a string inverter, but scaled to a single panel.
- DC sensing. Panel voltage and current are sampled at high speed at the module leads.
- MPPT. The micro inverter tracks the maximum power point of its single panel, independent of every other panel in the array.
- DC bus regulation. A boost converter steps the panel voltage to the internal DC bus.
- Inversion. High-frequency switching of FETs creates a chopped AC waveform, which an LC filter smooths into a sine wave.
- Grid synchronisation. Each micro inverter independently phase-locks to the grid and exports AC current. Anti-islanding is implemented per unit.
A typical AC trunk cable has 4 to 16 micro inverters tapped onto it. Each unit talks to the main gateway by power-line communication or 2.4 GHz wireless. The gateway aggregates telemetry and pushes it to the manufacturer’s cloud.
Technical deep dive
Architecture
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Micro inverter | Per-panel DC-to-AC conversion, MPPT, anti-islanding |
| AC trunk cable | Pre-engineered cable with drop connectors at every panel position |
| Branch terminator | Caps the open end of the trunk |
| Gateway | Bridge between micro inverters and home WiFi or cellular |
| Monitoring cloud | Aggregates per-panel data, displays in mobile app |
Power and voltage range
Modern micro inverters handle modules from 250 W up to 600 W and panel Voc up to 60 V. Newer dual-channel and quad-channel units handle 2 or 4 panels per device for cost reduction.
Branch limits
Each AC trunk has a maximum number of micro inverters set by the branch breaker rating and the cumulative current. For Enphase IQ8M in India, a single-phase branch supports up to 13 micro inverters per 20 A breaker. Larger arrays use multiple branches in parallel through a sub-distribution panel.
Communication
Most micro inverters use power-line communication on the same AC trunk. Some use 2.4 GHz mesh or Zigbee. Either way, a gateway near the home router aggregates data and pushes it to a cloud portal.
Battery integration
Micro inverter systems integrate with batteries through AC coupling. An AC battery, such as Enphase IQ Battery, sits on the same AC trunk and absorbs surplus or supplies backup. There is no DC bus shared between micro inverters and battery.
Real-world applications
Indian premium residential. Customers on complex flat-roof penthouses, terraces with parapet shade, or sites with seasonal tree shade. 3 to 10 kW arrays with one micro inverter per panel.
Small commercial. Cafes, boutique hotels and design studios where panel-level monitoring is part of the brand story.
Shaded rooftops. Sites where string inverter modelling predicts 8 percent or more mismatch loss over the year.
Multi-orientation roofs. East-west or three-sided sloped roofs where allocating MPPT inputs is awkward. Micro inverters eliminate the layout problem.
Phased expansion. Customers who want to start with 2 kW and add 1 kW per year. Each new panel adds its own inverter without reconfiguring the system.
Heritage and aesthetic projects. Minimal visible electronics, no inverter cabinet on the wall, no DC conduits running down the elevation.
Advantages of a micro inverter
Panel-level MPPT, which recovers energy lost to mismatch, shading, soiling and degradation.
Panel-level monitoring, which exposes faults and soiling in days, not months.
Lower roof DC voltage, which eliminates most arc-fault risk and simplifies rapid shutdown compliance.
Long product life, with 25-year warranties being the market norm.
Easy expansion, with no central inverter to upsize.
Reduced single-point-of-failure risk. If one micro inverter fails, you lose 250 to 400 W, not the whole array.
Limitations
Cost. 2 to 3 times higher per watt than string inverters at Indian prices.
More devices on the roof. Each is reliable on its own, but the failure surface is larger. Even at 1 percent failure per device over a 20-year lifetime, a 30-panel system sees roughly a 1 in 4 chance (about 26 percent) of needing a service visit.
Slightly lower peak efficiency. 95 to 97 percent against 97 to 98.6 percent for string. The gap is usually offset by mismatch recovery.
Roof access for service. Replacing a failed unit means climbing on the roof and removing one or more panels.
Higher BOM complexity for installers. AC trunk, gateway, branch terminators and multiple breakers add line items.
Common problems
Cable connector corrosion in coastal climates. AC trunk drop connectors fail in salty air if not protected by drip loops and the right ingress-rated parts.
Power-line communication dropouts. Other appliances injecting noise into the AC line cause the gateway to lose visibility. Add a line filter near the gateway.
Gateway WiFi connection lost. The most common monitoring outage. Resolve by moving the gateway closer to the router or by using a wired Ethernet link.
Failed micro inverter, hard to find. A new installer often replaces the panel before realising the inverter is at fault. Always check the cloud portal first.
Birds nesting under panels. Indian rooftops attract pigeons. Use mesh skirts around the array perimeter to prevent debris damage to micro inverter enclosures.
Trunk cable damaged by rodents. Cable runs through conduit always. Open-air runs invite chewing damage and AC faults.
Best practices for micro inverters
Plan AC branches before purchase. Branch length, breaker size and number of micro inverters per branch must match the manufacturer’s tables.
Use the manufacturer’s trunk cable. Indian site labour often improvises, and warranty support depends on documented trunk parts.
Install the gateway near the home WiFi router. PLC drops out quickly if the gateway is far from the breaker panel.
Use drip loops at every drop connector. Coastal and monsoon humidity ingresses through inverted connectors otherwise.
Register the system on the manufacturer’s monitoring portal on commissioning day. Without it, the failure data flow does not start.
Train the homeowner on the app. Panel-level monitoring only delivers if someone watches it.
Plan for replacement access. Place panels so that any one panel can be removed without disturbing more than two neighbours.

Indian market context
Enphase entered the Indian residential solar market actively from 2022. PM Surya Ghar eligibility for the Enphase IQ7 and IQ8 series depends on the scheme’s and the DISCOM’s current requirements, so verify the exact model documents rather than assuming a list entry. Hoymiles and APsystems are present through distributor channels.
Premium installers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, NCR and the Delhi NCR region are the leading micro inverter adopters. Tier 2 and 3 city installers are mostly on string inverters.
DISCOM net metering and CEIG processes accept micro inverter systems, but the documentation expects a single-line diagram with branch-level detail; installers unfamiliar with the branch-level format often turn to specialists for electrical and CEIG drawings.
BIS certification under IS 16221 applies to micro inverters as it does to string inverters. Anti-islanding compliance under IEC 62116 is per unit.
Standards and certifications
| Standard | Scope |

| IEC 62109-1, -2 | Inverter safety |
| IEC 61727 | Utility-interface characteristics |
| IEC 62116 | Anti-islanding |
| IS 16221 | Indian inverter safety |
| CEA Connectivity Regulations 2013 (as amended 2019) | Grid connection of distributed generation |
| UL 1741 | US grid-tie inverter standard, often referenced |
| MNRE ALMM | Module and cell list, not an inverter list; verify scheme and DISCOM inverter requirements |
Common mistakes
Pairing a 600 W bifacial module with an older micro inverter rated for 400 W input. The micro inverter clips the panel output every clear noon, costing 8 to 12 percent annual yield.
Daisy-chaining too many micro inverters on a single AC branch beyond the breaker rating. Nuisance trips in midday peak.
Skipping the drip loop on drop connectors. Connector failure within two monsoons.
Installing the gateway in a metal enclosure. Lost WiFi and lost PLC connectivity.
Forgetting to update the monitoring software when adding new panels. The new panels show as offline indefinitely.
Treating micro inverters as fit-and-forget. The 25-year warranty matters only if monitoring catches faults within the claim window.
